the best of the web
here are some sites that make it worth putting up with all those cat pictures,
illiterate "blogs," and popup ads on the internet. well worth
bookmarking. (actually i'm quite keen on the cat pictures.
the cia world
factbook - information and statistics on the countries of the earth.
common errors in
english - an excellent english usage resource. terrifically
useful as a reference, of course, but lots of fun to browse, too.
google isn't a search engine;
it's the search engine. but you already knew that.
the perry-castaņeda library
map collection has, um, a collection of maps. and stuff.
wikipedia - a publically written and
edited, freely available encyclopedia. yes, it has a ways to go, and yes,
it has its shortcomings, but i believe that this site is one of the most
momentous achievements of mankind, up there with the alexandria library and the
monn landings.
wordsmith.org - home of the
superb "a word a day" email
list. i've been a subscriber since i first got email, and if you
love english, you should be, too.
