pete's dream house
ok; so i was playing this computer game called
"raven shield," and on one of the
maps (coincidentally supposedly set in switzerland), i found this lovely little
cottage. it looked so cool that i immediately thought, "this is
how i want to live." rustic and spartan. i made my little commando
avatar guy walk around the place like some virtual prospective home buyer (i'm
afraid i let the bad guys run amok through the rest of the village), and
grabbed a couple screenshots (note: the screenshots are 1024x768, here
constrained to 800x600 - for best effect, save them on your PC and look at them
in full-screen with your image viewer):
exterior
interior downstairs
interior upstairs
i love the openness of the design, the vaulted ceiling, the loft
floor; it makes a small footprint feel simultaneously cozy and roomy. i
was so entranced by the atmosphere of this nonexistent pretend chalet that i
couldn't stop thinking about it; eventually, using the game house as a starting
point, i drew up some rough floor plans. the game designers had neglected
to include a bathroom (pretend commandos are really tough), but i
rectified that:
first floor plan sketch
second floor plan sketch
west elevation
finally, just for fun, i colored in a possible couple variations:
all masonry (like the house in dietikon)
imagined as a half-timber design
i can easily imagine such a place nestled into a remote lot, either in
switzerland, or perhaps maine... who knows? maybe, if i'm very lucky,
i'll get to build it some day, and you can come and visit me there.
8-)
