design philosophy
i feel that there is elegance in simplicity, and it's my goal that this site
reflect that conviction.
the site is designed to a modular meme, which allows me to work on it bit
by bit rather than having to produce a complete work all at once.
the site is meant to be highly accessible, fully usable by as wide a range
of user agents as possible, including not only graphical browsers, but also
text-only and text-to-speech clients and so on. it's possible, though,
that it may render a bit oddly in your viewer; for that i apologize. i
want the site to be "correct," but inscrutable, ever-changing (and poorly
documented) web design "standards" (not to mention browser compliance issues)
make that a difficult goal to achieve. take comfort from the fact that,
as i learn, the site moves inexorably, albeit slowly, toward "correctness."
technical minutiae
this is version 4.2 of this website. as of late 2008, my domains are 100%
under my control. i use lighttpd and
php for the website, postfix and dovecot for email, and it all runs on a freebsd virtual machine hosted by rootbsd.
most editing done "by hand," using mostly nedit and vim.
